The Ultimate FAQ Guide for Portable Reverse Osmosis.

Millions of people are presently overcoming freshwater scarcity by exploiting numerous water treatment technologies. The deterioration of freshwater reserves, which is mainly a consequence of population increase has rendered billions of people water-deprived. Water treatment gives people, industries, and commercial enterprises access to high-quality product water by eradicating objectionable impurities from contaminated water.

There are distinct systems, which make certain all interested parties are well catered for. Beneath, we focus on portable solar-powered reverse osmosis devices and their usage in off-grid and power-connected regions.

What is a Portable Solar-Powered Reverse Osmosis System?

A portable solar-powered reverse osmosis system is a water treatment unit that extracts dissolved pollutants from raw water using partially permeable membranes. Rather than using non-renewable energy, they primarily exploit solar energy, which is considered clean and renewable. They are configured intelligently to allow easy mobility and to economize on space. By utilizing high-rejection membranes, solar-powered reverse osmosis systems can extract up to 99.7% of objectionable dissolved solids.

Their dependence on solar power makes them applicable in off-grid areas, which are mainly cut off from essential utilities like water. In addition, portable solar-powered RO systems are tailored to treat distinct types of feed water. They are often integrated with an elaborate pretreatment system, which extracts contaminants likely to harm the semipermeable membranes. They do generate high-grade potable water and the quality can be polished using numerous post-treatment techniques.

How Do Portable Solar-Powered Reverse Osmosis Systems Work?

Portable solar-powered reverse osmosis systems are a unique type of reverse osmosis system characterized by their utilization of solar power. The primary technique they employ to extract undesirable constituents from water is called reverse osmosis. It is a pressure-reliant process that exploits partially permeable membranes to filter out dissolved pollutants. The power necessitated to run the high-pressure pumps is drawn from the sun.

However, before deploying the reverse osmosis process, the raw water is first preconditioned or pretreated to extract suspended solids and volatile chemicals capable of fouling the reverse osmosis equipment. Pressure is then exerted on the raw water consequently overwhelming the natural osmotic pressure and reversing the natural osmosis flow. The raw water runs through the partially porous membranes at high pressure resulting in the alienation of dissolved solids from water.

The semi-porous membranes have microscopic pores that only allow water and extremely low-molecular-weight solids passage. The water flows to the permeate side while the blocked impurities are retained in the retentate side and emitted as brine. The permeate stream delivers the product water, which is also referred to as reverse osmosis (RO) permeate. If the quality of the permeate is insufficient, a post-treatment process can be deployed to further refine the water. The video underneath details how portable solar reverse osmosis systems function.

Which Types of Portable Solar-Powered Reverse Osmosis Systems Do You Provide?

Characteristically, they have Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) levels ranging from 35,000ppm to 45,000ppm. They eliminate up to 99.7% of dissolved salts and can also extract viruses, bacteria, dissolved minerals, and organic chemicals. These solar desalination systems are mainly used in boats, coastal homes, resorts and businesses, power plants, and oil refineries.

●Solar-powered reverse osmosis systems for brackish water.

Brackish water RO systems are precisely tailored to desalinate or purify slightly salty water. Unlike seawater RO systems, their TDS levels are relatively lower ranging from 1000ppm to 15,000ppm. Their operating pressure is also lower due to the comparatively lower TDS level of brackish water. We manufacture both industrial and commercial solar-powered RO systems for brackish water.

●Solar-powered well water reverse osmosis systems.

Solar-powered reverse osmosis systems for well water are primarily meant for groundwater treatment. They filter out constituents such as heavy metals, dissolved minerals including calcium and magnesium, living microorganisms, dissolved salts, and organic chemicals. To avert scaling and corrosion, they are often equipped with iron removal filters, antiscalants, or ion exchange pre-filters.

●Containerized solar-powered reverse osmosis systems.

These are reverse osmosis systems installed in self-contained containers to allow movability. Typically, 10ft, 20ft, and 40ft metallic containers are used to house and protect these RO systems. Our containerized equipment is essentially preassembled at our facilities and it often includes lighting systems and air-conditioning.

●Skid-mounted solar-powered reverse osmosis systems.

These are also preassembled and self-contained reverse osmosis systems that are easy to transport and operate. Ordinarily, we use metal pellets, rails, or frames to mount all essential components of a reverse osmosis system. In addition to facilitating mobility, the skid mount also protects the RO system from reverberations caused by high-pressure pumps.

Which Pretreatment Systems Suit Best Portable Solar-Powered RO Systems?

Water pretreatment systems are water treatment units deployed to remove impurities that are likely to harm components of the primary water treatment system. Numerous systems and technologies are often utilized to pretreat feed water with selection primarily based on the type and concentration of pollutants in the water. The following are water pretreatment systems often used with portable solar-powered reverse osmosis systems.

●Chemical dosing systems.

Chemical dosing systems are pretreatment systems that extract pollutants by injecting reagents into the feed water. They are typically used to nullify volatile chemicals and to disinfect water. The primary chemical dosing systems used in RO water systems include chlorination, which kills living microorganisms likely to cause illnesses, and antiscalants, which eradicate dissolved minerals like calcium and magnesium.

●Media filters.

Varying media filters are used in feedwater pretreatment. Single-layered or multiple-layered media filters are used to protect the RO membranes from clogging. Multimedia filters and pressure sand filters extract debris, weed, plastics, sediments, dust, and suspended matter from water. However, multimedia filters are comparatively more effective than pressure sand filters owing to the presence of several layers.

●Ultrafiltration filter systems.

Ultrafiltration filter systems are membrane filtration systems reliant on pressure and semipermeable ultrafiltration membranes to extract unwanted contaminants. The membrane perforations (measuring approximately 0.005–0.1 μm) block off suspended solids, microorganisms like Giardia, colloids, and particles that cause turbidity.

Solar-powered ultrafiltration filter system

●Ion exchange systems.

Ion exchange systems extract dissolved minerals including hardness-causing minerals like magnesium and calcium by swapping them for non-objectionable ions. When deployed as pretreatment systems, they help prevent the accumulation of scale on the RO system by softening the feed water.

Which Quality of Potable Water is Generated by Portable Solar-Powered RO Systems?

Portable solar-powered reverse osmosis systems are generally high-performing water treatment solutions that generate Type III purified water. This water is collected from the permeate stream and suits applications such as drinking, spotless cleaning, irrigation, and feed water for ultra-pure water systems. The potable water is characterized by low TDS levels (often 300 to 600ppm), low microbial count, a TOC level of <200ppb, and relatively low conductivity.

However, the quality of the RO permeate may differ depending on the type of feed water, the pretreatment technology used, and the condition of the solar-powered RO system. It is also possible to elevate the quality of the RO permeate. Simply integrate a post-treatment system of your choice to extract pollutants that survive the reverse osmosis process.

How Can I Refine the Quality of Water Produced by a Portable Solar-Powered Reverse Osmosis System?

Post-treatment is a process that allows you to improve the quality of RO permeates generated by your portable solar-powered RO system. Although these systems are generally effective, the range of pollutants they extract is limited. Post-treatment takes care of the remaining impurities consequently generating high-quality purified water. Here are some of the ways in which you can improve the quality of your RO permeate.

●Filtration using activated carbon filters.

Activated carbon filters extract varying chemicals that are likely to pass through the RO membrane filters. They extract chlorine, Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), and organic chemicals known for causing unpleasant odors and tastes.

●Remineralization.

Solar-powered reverse osmosis systems often extract virtually all minerals found in water. This renders the RO permeate unhealthy and tasteless to some people. Remineralization adds essential minerals back to the RO permeate thereby making it healthy drinking water. The WHO guidelines on drinking water recommend 10 mg/L of magnesium and 30 mg/L of calcium.

●UV water sterilization.

Ultraviolet sterilization is a water disinfection technology that uses germicidal rays rather than chemicals to destroy illness-causing microorganisms. UV water sterilizers are often integrated with RO drinking water systems and can extract up to 99.99% of microbial pollutants.
